As Bayern Munich faces competition from Liverpool and Chelsea, Manchester United have reportedly ended their participation in Dayot Upamecano.

Manchester United are no longer in the running for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, according to reputed German journalist Christian Falk. In the race to sign the Frenchman, Chelsea and Liverpool have been tipped as favorites alongside Bayern Munich.

Dayot Upamecano is currently one of the most sought-after center-backs in Europe and has been on the wishlists of many of Europe’s biggest clubs. In 2017, the 22-year-old joined RB Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg and made over 100 appearances for the German side, with Die Rotten Bullen playing a key role.

Under the leadership of Julian Nagelsmann, Upamecano and Leipzig challenged the mighty Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title and even made it to last season’s UEFA Champions League semi-finals. The Frenchman has a €42 million release clause in his name and with the defender’s interest at an all-time high, if a bigger club comes calling, he might be on his way out.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of Bayern Munich, did not shy away from expressing interest in signing Upamecano and the move from another German club to Bayern Munich is one that we have seen time and time again.

Bayern is on the lookout for a center-back who could replace him, with David Alaba associated with Real Madrid and Chelsea. Jerome Boateng has also been linked to Chelsea, and Bayern will need to improve its defensive contingent if that is the case.

Chelsea had long had a desire to strengthen their defensive options, and for quite some time, the Londoners had their sights on Upamecano. Chelsea has been affiliated with a lot of Bundesliga advocates since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel and they do not have much of a problem fulfilling the release clause of Upamecano.

Thiago Silva offered them short-term refuge, but Upamecano will fit right in as they look to develop a team for the future, with the crux of Chelsea’s squad being young. As for Liverpool, this season they have had their fair share of wounds and have suffered in the defensive process.

Virgil van Dijk’s absence has not only seen Liverpool get defensively abused, but also taken away a lot of space from the threatening full-backs of Liverpool. Liverpool needs a long-term defensive signing to replace the injury-prone Joel Matip, making Upamecano a realistic target, considering the signing of Ozan Kaban and Ben Davies in the January transfer window.
