Memphis Depay is the target of Barcelona but Louis van Gaal said the Lyon forward may not be exactly what his old club wants.
Memphis Depay is a talented player who can give a lot but Louis van Gaal warned Barcelona that the Lyon forward could not solve all of their problems.
The 27-year-old is a target for the LaLiga giants, where former Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman is in charge after Quique Setien ‘s dismissal.
After a disappointing spell under Van Gaal at Manchester United, Dutchman Depay has revived his career in Lyon by scoring and assisting a remarkable 63 goals in three full seasons at Groupama Stadium.
But Van Gaal, who has also coached Depay for the national side of the Netherlands, said Barca will not have Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo as a similar-caliber world-class player.
“It’s still a question mark,” Tuttomercatoweb told me.
“Depay is a very interesting player, particularly when he can play freely. So we need to think about adjusting to a new culture and a new team, and the first year is always the toughest. Look at [Matthijs] de Ligt or Frenkie de Jong. Depay has potential, but Messi or Christiano Ronaldo is not.”
