Milan defeated Roma in a tense match at the Stadio Olimpico in the Italian capital, as Stefano Pioli’s side aims to win the league for the first time since 2011.

After Federico Fazio fouled Davide Calabria, Milan took the lead with a penalty from Franck Kessie five minutes before the break.

With an arrowed shot five minutes after the break, Jordan Veretout pulled Roma level, but the visitors were soon back in front.

After a bad clearance from Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez, Ante Rebic gathered a pass from Alexis Saelemaekers and drilled home the winner eight minutes later.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had been out of form for Milan, had been replaced shortly before Croatian international Rebic scored the game-winner.

“I told the guys that two games (losses) can’t erase a year’s worth of confidence,” Pioli said.

“It’s a critical victory at a key point in the season that gets us out of two odd weeks.”

Ibrahimovic sat through the final minutes of the game with an ice pack on his left thigh, preparing for a week in which he would juggle football and show business as one of the San Remo music festival’s guest presenters.
