After their Champions League heroics, Paris Saint-Germain crashed down to earth with a bump as they suffered a 2-0 Ligue 1 loss to Monaco on Sunday.

In the first leg of their last-16 tie on Tuesday, Mauricio Pochettino’s side claimed a spectacular 4-1 victory over Barcelona, but they never looked like reaching those heights as they slumped to the season’s sixth league loss.

The sixth goal of the campaign by Sofiane Diop gave Monaco an early lead before Guillermo Maripan shortly after the interval put the game beyond the grasp of the hosts.

The outcome means that four points behind leaders Lille, who defeated Lorient 4-1 earlier in the day, with Niko Kovac’s Monaco two points back in fourth, are third-placed PSG.

After just six minutes, Monaco went ahead, Diop going past Keylor Navas from six yards after Kevin Volland nodded Ruben Aguilar’s cross into his direction.

That did nothing to ignite PSG into life, and in the first half, the home team failed to grab any simple opportunities.

The nearest they came was when the strong drive from a distance by Idrissa Gueye flashed past the right-hand post of Benjamin Lecomte.

After the break, things did not get any better for PSG as Maripan dispossessed Ander Herrera in the penalty area before slotting a fine finish past Navas from 15 yards in the 51st minute to double Monaco’s advantage.

Soon after, Volland inexplicably headed wide from four yards, but it meant little in the end as Monaco kept on extending their unbeaten streak to 11 games in Ligue 1.
