Ramos Net Real Madrid Victory Against Real Betis

After a Benito Villamarin whirlwind game, Sergio Ramos netted a controversial winner from the penalty spot to hand Real Madrid their first victory of the season over 10-man Real Betis.

Zinedine Zidane gave Luka Jovic a surprise start after drawing their season opener away to Real Sociedad, with Martin Odegaard remaining in the lineup over Luka Modric, who fell to the bench.

With the Uruguayan converting a Karim Benzema cross from close range to net Real Madrid’s first goal of the season, it took the visitors only 14 minutes to open the scoring through Fede Valverde.

When Real Betis netted a quickfire double, the dynamic of the match changed in just two minutes, with Aissa Mandi first powering a header past Thibaut Courtois and then William Carvalho squeezing a Belgian shot through.

At the beginning of the second half, Modric and Isco were added, with the former having an immediate impact. Before the Brazilian was sent off for bringing down Jovic as he was clean through, Emerson’s own goal under pressure from Benzema restored parity.

To prevent substitute Borja Mayoral from having a shot away, VAR was used again to determine that Marc Bartra had handled inside the field, providing Ramos with the opportunity to kick Panenka a spot past Joel Betis, giving all three points to Real Madrid.
