On Wednesday, Athletic Club Bilbao confirmed that veteran attacking midfielder Raul Garcia had agreed to a contract extension to complete the club’s round of contract renewals.
The 34-year-old, who has also played for Osasuna and Atletico Madrid, as well as making two Spanish national appearances, has agreed to extend his current deal, which was due to expire at the end of June until June 2022, with the option of a further year if it meets several targets.
Garcia has long been regarded as one of the Spanish game’s most competitive players, demonstrating leadership both on and off the pitch. While at Athletic, he became a regular goalscorer, scoring 70 goals in 238 games, with two goals against Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercup semifinals this season, which the Basque club won after beating FC Barcelona in the final.
Garcia saw net 15 goals in La Liga last season, ending the season as the top scorer of the club and he has three league goals, this campaign, as well as heading home to a 90th-minute equalizer in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals that helped to qualify his side for the semifinals.
Garcia’s contract means that Athletic has now secured the future of all its key players who were out of contract at the end of this season, with all new deals being penned by Oscar de Marcos, Mikel Vesga, Unai Vencedor, Mikel Balenziaga, and Oir Zarraga.
