RB Leipzig took the tentative top spot on Matchday 3 after a comfortable 4-0 home victory over Schalke, with Angelino, Willi Orban, and Marcel Halstenberg on the scoresheet after Can Bozdogan’s own goal.
Perhaps as expected, Leipzig dominated the proceedings from the outset, with a wild Suat Serdar effort of some 25 yards the only Schalke effort in the first half. Julian Nagelsmann ‘s side set about their business, with a fair chance of falling to Angelino’s left wing-back, but instead of firing, the Manchester City loanee took a contact, allowing Ralf Fährmann to get into his hands.
Already in the club-record stretch of 18 games without a victory, things took another painful twist for the Royal Blues when Serdar, afflicted by late injury, took a knock in the middle of the field and had to go with less than a quarter of the game played.
The home side inflicted more suffering on the half-hour mark when Emil Forsberg forced his own goal out of substituting Bozdogan before Angelino made amends to double the lead when heading home to cross Christopher Nkunku to the far post.
Amadou Haidara had a great opportunity to make three of them before the break, after a smooth passing step on the edge of the box, but he blasted unchallenged. Willi Orban did not make a mistake, however, when he propelled the header from Halstenberg ‘s cross past Fährmann on a half-time stroke.
