Former Real Madrid player Edwin Congo was arrested Tuesday during a police operation linked to drug trafficking in Spain, along with another 10 men. The 43-year-old was detained by the Central Narcotics Brigade and later released after making a statement. Congo arrived in Spain back in 1999 when he joined Los Blancos from Once Caldas in exchange for five million euros-a contracts that made him the most lucrative move in Colombian football history at the time.

Having struggled to persuade Real Madrid, he was loaned out to Real Valladolid, where he played 14 times and netted once. He then joined Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes, scoring four goals in 10 games, before signing for Toulouse.

In France, Congo celebrated just one goal of its own and returned to Los Blancos afterward. This was followed by a four-year move to Levante where he lived. The last elite clubs he played for before retiring in 2009 were Sporting Gijon and Recreativo de Huelva. Congo has portrayed Real Madrid Stars in charity matches in recent years
