A one-season ban from European football was given to Turkish Super Lig leaders Trabzonspor for violating UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations.

UEFA said in Wednesday’s statement that the club had failed to comply with the terms of a 2016 settlement agreement requiring them to “break-even comply.”

The governing body has confirmed that the ban would be applied if the club qualified in either of the next two seasons for the Champions League or Europa League.

Trabzonspor was suspended for one season from the Champions League and Europa Lague because the club failed to achieve financial targets at the end of the financial year-2019, UEFA’s official website announced.

Thus, Trabzonspor breached financial fake play rules. If they qualify for the European Cups, the team will be forced to miss one European Cup season-next or 2021/22.

UEFA noted that the Turks did not respect the terms of the agreement concluded since May 2016. The penalty would not have been implemented had Trabzonspor shown the results needed in the fiscal year 2019.

This news is particularly painful for Trabzonspor because now the team fights with Bashakshehir for the championship-after 26 tours, both clubs have 53 points.

Trabzonspor, who has not played in the Super Lig Summit since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic, is on points with Istanbul Basaksehir having eight games remaining.

Turkish football is nearing its return from suspension and the Super Lig is expected to commence again on 12 June.
