Thomas Muller tested positive for coronavirus and will miss the Club World Cup final against Tigres in Qatar on Thursday, as reported by the Bundesliga club.

After winning the Champions League last season, Hansi Flick’s side qualified for the Club World Cup and defeated Egyptian side Al Ahly 2-0 in the semifinals.

But after his positive test, Muller won’t be available for the final. Bayern is also without defender Jerome Boateng for the game, as for personal reasons he has returned to Germany.

Bayern last won the tournament in its present guise in 2013 but were also intercontinental champions in 1976 and 2001.

ESPN has contacted local authorities in Bavaria about Muller’s potential return to Germany amid an ongoing infection.

On Monday as they host Arminia Bielefeld, the German champions are back in action in the Bundesliga, but it’s doubtful Muller will be featured.

Meanwhile, the suggestion by Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge that Bundesliga players should step up and get vaccines first because it would give people more confidence in Germany was not well received.

“If, for instance, a Bayern player receives a vaccination, the trust within the society will grow,” Rummenigge said on Tuesday on Sport1. Since I know as a former footballer that the body means it all to a pro.

“But we don’t want to skip the queue, but as footballers, we could do our share for society as role models.”

As Dagmar Freitag, head of the German Parliament’s Sports Committee suggested selfishness was behind the Bayern chief’s plan, Rummenigge’s idea was met with widespread condemnation.

“It gives you the impression that [Rummenigge] wants to solve his problems because we know that two of their players could not travel to Qatar because of an infection,” she told Sky Germany on Wednesday, adding the context was rather “to have healthy players and not to increase the country’s willingness to receive a vaccination.”

In the meantime, sports sociologist Gunter Gebauer told ARD Sportschau that favoring athletes was “deeply anti-social and morally banned, while several Bundesliga players disagreed with the line of argument of Rummenigge.”
