With the first chance and a tidy finish, Pereyra transformed under goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini and after only 23 seconds the home side was ahead, but Muriel answered with a brilliant run into the opposition box to level the game at the death of the first 45 minutes.
Udinese played a physical match and Juan Musso did well to keep out the few, but great, opportunities that an Orobici side that dominated possession created before the break.
The Friuli, however, were dangerous going forward and indicated that the visitors wanted to be disturbed.
Right before Muriel’s shot, Nerazzurri goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini dropped the ball in the area and dived low to block Pereyra. He seemed to have caught the player, and the home team objected to Calvaresi’s decision to let the match continue.
After a glance at VAR, the match official stood by his decision, and no penalty was given, only for Muriel and Atalanta to go straight up and score the equalizer.
There were two big moments for Atalanta, who would have raised their morale ahead of the second half. Udinese continued playing a physical game in the second half and slowed the proceedings down, but became worried when Atalanta made three changes early on.
Josip Ilicic, Duvan Zapata, and Robin Gosens were added after 58 minutes and Gian Piero Gasperini indicated his intention of going for the three points.
La Dea huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a way past Juan Musso, who had another excellent game in goal, despite the few clear cut opportunities created by the visitors.
The Friuli concentrated more on keeping the Atalanta attack out, and when he pulled himself free at seven yards for once, Ruslan Malinovskiy should have done better but decided not to finish the attack and back-heeled it to anyone.
Zeegelaar bashed Gollini with a high boot in the 86th minute and the action was stopped before the ball hit the back of the net, but Udinese still showed signs of being hostile going forward.
A professional second half to pick up a point against one of the big teams in the League and Luca Gotti’s men seemed content with a draw.
On the other side, Atalanta lost the chance to claim a Serie A spot among the top four.
