As the 22-year-punishment old’s set West Ham on their way to a 3-0 victory at home to Sheffield United, Declan Rice proved he was correct to take the ball off Jesse Lingard.
The deadlock was broken when Rice slotted past Aaron Ramsdale, but there was a lengthy conversation between him and Lingard as to who would take it.
Lingard picked the ball up first after being fouled in the box by Chris Basham, but Rice came over to remind him that he was the designated taker, having stepped up for an earlier spot-kick that ended up being overturned.
The Manchester United loanee was frustrated as he handed it over to Rice, but was the first to congratulate his teammate when it was stuck away.
An Issa Diop header and a late Ryan Fredericks strike sealed the win at the London Stadium, which puts the Hammers above champions Liverpool in the Premier League table.
David Moyes’ side is fourth, but it may only have been for a couple of hours as Chelsea’s win over Newcastle later on Monday would see the Blues taking fourth from them.
