After his side lost 2-1 at Burnley on Monday night, Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was furious with referee Lee Mason’s performance.
When their revival continued, Ashley Barnes’ first goal in more than a year set Burnley on their way to victory.
When he went home halfway through the first half, Barnes ended a 17-game streak without a goal, while a thumping effort by Chris Wood early in the second made it the first time since February that Burnley had scored more than once in a home game.
On a promising night, they should have had more, ruined only by the late penalty for Wolves from Fabio Silva, as Burnley made it eight points from their last four games to put behind them a poor start to the season.
But Nuno was scathing in his evaluation of Ref Mason after the game.
“The referee does not have the quality to whistle a game in the Premier League,” Nuno told Sky Sports.
“This is a concern that we knew we had before with Lee Mason. It’s not about the main errors or decisions, it’s about how the game is played by him. The players get anxious, so many voices, and when some players are screaming, he whistles through the voices.
We’re talking about the best rivalry, and obviously, he doesn’t have the consistency to whistle in the game. I’m sorry to say so, but if I didn’t say it, I wouldn’t feel right.
I don’t want to see him anymore, that’s what I said to him. I hope he’s not whistling at our game again because all the games we have with Lee Mason are still the same.
He does not control the players, and both teams are constantly fighting with the players. The game flows like all the other referees, and there is dialogue. He’s just not prepared to do that.”
