Ronaldo became billionaire

During his career, Cristiano Ronaldo became the first footballer in history to become a billionaire.

According to Forbes, the Juventus star in the last year made $105 million (£83 million) before tax, putting its overall value over the mark of $1 billion ( £ 789 million).

The magazine, behind tennis legend Roger Federer, rapper Kanye West and Kylie Jenner, has named the 35-year-old attacker the fourth-highest-earning celebrity in 2020.

Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi, who Forbes said last year won $104 m ( £ 82 m), came in fourth, while Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar came in seventh with $95.5 m ( £ 75 m).

Ronaldo is only the third athlete ever to accumulate such wealth after the golf icon Tiger Woods and former boxer Floyd Mayweather, and the first to do so in a team sport.

International Portugal is said to have earned $650 m ( £ 513 m) in wages over his 17 years as a professional athlete, with the rest coming from endorsements. Since 2016, he has been tied to a lucrative lifetime deal with Nike and is tied to several other big-name brands.

The five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or is also building a business empire in his home town of Funchal in Madeira, with his fashion and lifestyle brand, hotel chain, and the CR7 museum.

The coronavirus pandemic hit his earnings in 2020, as his salary fell after the Juventus squad agreed to take a 30 percent pay cut.

Although this year’s salary for Messi has been drastically reduced by 70 percent because of the crisis, Forbes predicts that the Argentine sensation will join his eternal rival in next year’s Millionaire’s club.

Series A will return later this month, having been on hiatus since March, with Juve facing a trip back to Bologna on their first game on June 22. Then, four days later, they host Lecce.
