Scott Brown: Fleetwood Town manager role ‘couldn’t have been any better’

Former Celtic captain Scott Brown believes the opportunity to become the Fleetwood Town manager could not have been any better as he takes up his first management role. Chairman Andy Pilley said they held interviews with a number of candidates but Brown was the outstanding one. Pilley described Brown as “a born leader, a serial winner, and incredibly serious about becoming a successful manager”.

“I knew a couple of months back that once I left Aberdeen, I didn’t want to start with a new manager at 37-years-old,” Scott Brown said after he was appointed the Fleetwood Town manager. “It becomes harder to keep up with the younger ones. I think you know when it’s the right time, I didn’t want to keep dropping down the leagues and everyone watching that old guy in the middle of the park. It’s the right time and I couldn’t have got a better opportunity. To start at a club like Fleetwood is incredible. The chairman has plans and the training facilities are exceptional, higher-level Championship. Hopefully, that can pull some quality players to the club as well.”

“I’m a young manager, I’ll make mistakes, but hopefully my knowledge of the game will help out with that,” he added. “I’ve got an assistant who is quite young as well. The two of us are learning, we’re going to lean a bit on Stephen Crainey, who has been here for a long time and done fantastic for the club. He knows the league very well and the lads too. There’s a lot of studying to do for us. We’ve got great recruitment staff here that have sent us a lot of players. My job for myself and my assistant is to sit down and find out what positions we need.”
