Semedo – The Central Item For Barcelona

When he moved from Benfica to Barcelona in the summer of 2017, Nelson Semedo was considered a strong player and has been perfectly adequate in his 71st team league starts so far. But he’s been mostly in the background and no one can expect him to be the focus of this summer’s network of transfer speculation across Europe.

This morning’s cover story by Mundo Deportivo describes him as a “central item” for Barcelona in its three main summer pursuits-those of Joao Cancelo, Neymar, and Lautaro Martinez.

As a player who is obviously regarded by the Blaugrana as expendable, but with respectable market value, he is invaluable as a trade piece in this stunted summer market for coronavirus.

Barcelona is expected to use Portuguese defender Nelson Semedo as a makeweight for Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar, Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, and Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo in future transfers. The vice president of Barcelona recently suggested that the club would be using players in potential trade deals this summer because of the financial consequences of coronavirus outbreak.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca will continue to use Semedo as a makeweight since arriving from Benfica in 2017, despite the development of the 26-year-old into Team number one right-back. Portugal International made 29 appearances at the side of Quique Setien during the current season, but in recent weeks the discussion about its future has slowed.

Barca is apparently attempting to sign either Martinez or Neymar rather than both this summer, while Cancelo is said to have emerged as a potential choice for defense. The Catalan giants have reportedly made available a number of other players ahead of the transfer window this summer.

They clearly won’t be able to afford the upfront fee required for any of these goals, and they’ll have to convince every buying party that they do want the Portugal international in the deal.

Anybody’s guess is how they plan to compete without their only natural right back in the squad.
