Former England captain Steph Houghton was omitted from the 23-player squad for Euro 2022 as Sarina Weigman opted for Chelsea striker Fran Kirby. Houghton missed the second half of the WSL season with fatigue but returned to the squad for Chelsea’s FA Cup final win over Manchester City. Houghton has been struggling with an Achilles injury and has not played a competitive game since January. This will mark her first absence in the last five major international tournaments.

England will be led by captain Leah Williamson and vice-captains Millie Bright and Ellen White. Chloe Kelly made the cut despite only just returning from an ACL injury and will be amongst six major tournament debutants. The other players to miss out on the 23-player squad are Lucy Staniforth, Sandy MacIver, Niamh Charles, and Katie Zelem.

“I am excited by what is possible for this group. We all know this is a huge opportunity and it is one we have to grab with both hands. The chance to represent the nation on such a big stage on home soil is one to relish,” Sarah Weigman said after Steph Houghton was one of the names to miss out on the England squad for Euro 2022. “Togetherness is a big part of what we are all about and from every player in the squad to my superb support team, and with the strong backing of everyone at The FA and our fans, we are committed to making it a summer to remember.”
