World Cup: German FA taking FIFA to Court over OneLove ban

The German FA is taking FIFA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over their ban on players wearing the OneLove armband at the World Cup. After receiving a warning from FIFA that they would be subject to “massive” sporting sanctions if they broke tournament rules by allowing their captain to wear the armband, which promotes diversity and inclusion, the DFB instructed Germany captain Manuel Neuer not to wear the rainbow armband for the game against Japan on Wednesday. If the CAS rules quickly that the suspension is invalid, Neuer might be able to start for Germany against Spain on Sunday in the group’s second match.

Within 48 hours of receiving an application, a special ad hoc division of CAS that was established for this World Cup hopes to render a ruling. Germany’s players covered their mouths before the start of their shocking 2-1 loss against Japan at the Khalifa Stadium in protest at being prevented from wearing the rainbow armband.

“In the German national team, diversity and respect are principles that we wanted to show up for by donning the captain’s armband. We wanted our opinions to be heard alongside those of other countries,” the German FA said about FIFA during the World Cup. “Making a political statement wasn’t the goal because human rights are unalienable. Even while that ought to be common knowledge, it still isn’t. This is why we consider this message to be so crucial. Giving us the armband without giving us a voice is the same thing. We maintain our stance.”
